(The) Blues is information.

An etymological aside:

John Mactaggart’s “Scottish Gallovidian Encyclopedia” (1824) containing odd words he had learned while growing up in Galloway and elsewhere in Scotland, has an entry for Thread o’Blue, “any little smutty touch in song-singing, chatting, or piece of writing.”

This “smutty touch” is responsible fr countless laquers, 78’s, 45’s, LPs, + equally endless conjecture in the form of grey to yellow to purple scholarship, dissertations, articles, liner-notes, + questionable tomes. It is also responsible fr Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones.

Some maintain that (The) Blues is black, but I do not think it is as simple as that.

(The) Blues is information, such as that engenders allure, immersion, repetition, solace, joy…

and,

(The) Blues is information, such as that engenders debate, obsession, one-upsmanship, isolation, death…

But take away the words (these included), take away the matrix numbers + the AAB verses + cultural studies and what have ye? A keening has been spoken of, something of a wail, in the presence again of death.

(The) Blues, without words (even these) is information. It is the substance of an impulse, a cipher, a penetrating exchange. When asked where the tunes he played came from, the great bluesman Robert Pete Williams said that he was playing the sound came to him over the air, a sound perhaps that though passing, has always been there.

What follows is the product of an afternoon, an afternoon on which very little was said. These men are antennae. A singular duality without the asking, transmission ditto.

Music is a time machine. If a favorite song from your formative years comes on the car radio, you are emotionally transported back to who you were then, even if just for a moment. Fall in love with an lp from forty years ago that you’ve never heard before and it might as well have been released yesterday. Sit down in your easy chair and put on one of your favorite sides and twenty minutes can go by in a matter of seconds. There are powerful moments during a live performance when an entire room aligns itself with infinite other moments in different rooms, at different times, but the same, all the same. Like looking at yourself in a photo inside a book looking out at yourself holding the book inside the photo… The five fellas who got together for this session folded up the walls, sealed the doors and set the controls for multiverse… Thankfully the record button still works in the wormhole.

Expectation. It can be a funny thing when it comes to music. There is a lot of dialog around the critic’s table about expectation – should an artist reproduce a sound they are known for, placating the folks who are most likely to be listening? Or should they expand and explore the varying paths laid before them by their muse, potentially turning aside their devoted armada of ears? The sign, or sound, of a great musical creator is one who can take both possibilities and present something inherently them while also eliciting a little breath of “what is happening?” from the listeners mouth. In a collaborative setting, there is a greater chance that the music walks out in a brand new pair of shoes… the combination of two or more varying musical minds can create something beyond either of those two options. This session eschews most known genres to present a different look at the concept of expectation. Raise you hand if you knew this was coming…

Who can write about genre anymore? The data stream has microniched genre to digital dust even in the face of so many tags. So one Jim’s psych is another Jane’s pop… And what of the “private press” in these turbulent times? A group of people… getting together… making some music… documenting it, producing it… making it available for others with the hope that they might enjoy sharing in the moment after the moment has passed… sounds familiar, yes? No matter the style, these records had a certain feel, an intimacy, a looseness, a playfulness… They could make sorrow sound beautiful, minutia sound anthemic, personal sound universal. Pooled together in this session, the sounds of these four musicians defy categorization in an age where knee jerk pigeonholing sometimes passes for listening. Let us just call it private for the public…

We could talk about an improviser’s ability to listen to the other players around them and how important it is to crossing the line between jamming and spontaneous composition… But instead, we should dwell for 49 minutes on the idea of a person being at the top of their game. It is not an expression used in music very much, but it applies here. A musician can have many peaks at various points in their relationship to sound. At these moments, they are masters… wizards… conjuring other worlds almost immediately. This session documents a moment when two such musicians crossed paths…

Fearlessness. It is there in all great music, whether it springs from oblivion, conceit, phantasm or distraction. Paired with a personal and razor-sharp aesthetic, it can be the ember that ignites both darling and derision. It would be easy to assume that all improvisation is fearless, which would not be true. Falling into patterns is as easy as playing the middle eight the exact same way every time. Likewise it would seem that re-recording a song would be a safe move in a studio. But deconstructing a composition to its core elements can be as revealing as a lysergic glance in a mirror. It’s all about the approach, the step taken… is it hesitant, or does the foot fall with a thunderous crash? This session rumbles with the aftershocks of the later…

The Prequel…

Ahhhh… A time machine entry into the Natch cannon. An amazing document of four separate and unique entities gathering together for a day of improvisation. Something magical happens when a group of musicians leave their thing at the door and simultaneously bring their thing, hardcore, into a session in a way that gels together with the other folks in the room. The unconscious connection these people had was a treat to hear unfold over the course of a day & night and, in a way, planted one of the earliest seeds that spawned the idea for the Natch series. They showed up, they played, and they went their separate ways, like musical desperados into the late summer morn…

Many thanks to Mr. Nuss for setting up the session all those years back.

There is an aspect of music that creates an invisible map, plotting points along the vapors we make tangible as memory. Where the moments which we can recall intersect there are revelatory connections. More often than not, time spent exploring shared sonic remembrances is fleeting. The capture of a capture… the reinvention of a capture in a communal setting… and the creation of something totally new from nothing more than an unspoken understanding of a path shared are things to behold… The music in these recordings touches on all of these possibilities.

There’s a vibration like a current running under the crust… You can feel it bubbling under your toes when you walk around and hear it dancing in your ears in the dead of night. You can fight it or let it wash over you… droning… buzzing. There are particular people who have special access to it. The instruments they pick up resonate in a certain way, just a little different from other players. A touch more timeless, a bit unfathomable, a tad frightening / exciting / stirred by the inexplicable. These recordings are the answer to the question - “What would happen when you put four of these people knee to knee and let them do their thing?”
